Antioch Dunes Evening Primrose
The Antioch Dunes are located just below the junction of the Sacramento and San Joaquin Rivers in Contra Costa County, California. Originally, the dunes were the only known habitat for the Antioch Dunes Evening Primrose, Oenothera deltoides ssp. howellii. Surrounded by industrial debris and decimated by sand mining, the dunes and their flora are now only a fragment of their original size. In 1976, the Antioch Primrose was listed as an endangered species and the dunes designated as "critical habitat".
Due to much hard work, the Antioch Primrose is now successfully grown at the Regional Parks Botanic Garden in Tilden Park, Berkeley, California, and is a member of the Center for Plant Conservation's National Collection at this location. In the words of Dr. Steve Edwards, Director of the Garden, "The Antioch Primrose is one of the garden's showiest wildflowers -- our own poster child."
